Organizing Academia (Chapter 5)

From Studio to System

How will you turn education into a force for change?

“What is the relationship between architecture and capitalism? How does that then change the academy such that students are prepared to ‘do architecture’?”

Discussion guide

Theme: how schools, studios and classrooms can become places to organize.

  1. What did school teach you about what architects are and what we do?
  2. Where did your education connect to the politics of your own work, and where did politics stay abstract?
  3. What would it take to turn a studio, seminar or student group into a site of collective action?
  4. Who has the least say in your school: students, adjuncts, international students on visas? How could we organize together?
  5. How will you turn education into a force for change?

Facilitator tip: link people’s classroom experiences to bigger questions, without needing to solve everything in one conversation.

“The path towards structural change is to have those within the institution, the firm or the school or the museum be the ones who decide how it operates.“
