This “Ask Me Anything” event is a conversation about research and writing practices that uncover alternative narratives and challenge the dominant systems of architectural practice.
Dan Jonas Roche is news editor at The Architect’s Newspaper, where he’s been covering the Dattner campaign, and co-author with Andrew Santa Lucia of Antifascist Architecture (2026). He has taught at The New School and Kean University.
Aaron Cayer is an assistant professor of architecture at Cal Poly Pomona and the author of Incorporating Architects: How American Architecture Became a Practice of Empire (University of California Press), which traces the rise of US architecture and engineering corporations like AECOM after World War II.
James Heard is a doctoral student in architecture at Columbia GSAPP and a licensed architect in California, researching the relationship between labor organizing, surveillance and the formation of the discipline in the early 20th century.
⇨ What shapes academic research, and who decides which questions about architectural history, theory or practice get pursued?
⇨ How can architectural history and theory move beyond critique to influence alternative forms of practice and production?
⇨ What can architectural workers learn from higher education organizing to build collective power across the discipline?
