“Over the course of my time within, and in conversation with, architectural institutions, I have heard much floral language as to why no change is possible. In much of the profession, be it the academy or practice, there is more imagination for collapse than change. When our students start dreaming and demanding, we share our knowing smiles, seeing ‘the real world’ as a treadmill in motion with no other option than faster. But I also think, for all our pragmatic faithlessness, there is the creeping understanding that we do not exist in conditions wherein reproduction of our current systems can even begin to resemble practicality. Such conditions continue to give rise to more frequent, and potentially more successful, students’ and workers’ movements around the world. These forces are the authors of expansive demands.”
