Bodies Organizing Architecture

Join us at the GSAPP Incubator space tonight at 7:00pm in New York, for Critical Happy Hour, sponsored by QSPACE and f-architecture.  The event is free and open to the public.

This month’s event in the series, titled: Bodies Organizing Architecture, will feature Quilian Riano of DSGN AGNC and the Architecture Lobby.  We will look at Architecture Lobby’s efforts to unionize architecture labor, to decentralize power structures, as exemplified by the lobby’s organizational model, and to organize refusal and protest. We will also discuss the limits of an organizational model based on plurality and operating of outside traditional systems of power.  Come discuss Quilian’s work, learn more about the Architecture Lobby, have a drink, and organize architectural labor.

Critical Happy Hour is a series of events that examines how design thinking and critical discourse can create change. The next two months, we’re talking about activism and organizing architectural practice.  Critical Happy Hour’s upcoming events focuses on the role of professional architecture organizations in mobilizing political action. Specifically, we look at the role of awarding membership in affecting current and future architects, alternative practitioners within architecture, and professionals in allied fields. We examine the organizational structures (laws, procedures, hierarchies) and their relationships to institutions outside of architecture to determine how they function to create political change. We invite representatives (and antagonizers) to attend a series of working confrontations* that bring together individuals concerned with spatial politics to plan, organize, and affect change.
